Why?
(During Lent, we have invited members of the Peace of Christ Church Community to share their own reflections, stories, or poetry about what Lent means to them. This Ash Wednesday poem comes from Cosette Pratt.)
“Why?”
by Cosette Pratt
It’s March 5th, a very important day.
A time to sit with ourselves, and a time to pray.
Our thoughts spiral all inside our heads.
Why are we here? Why have we come?
Why?
Well, what is Ash Wednesday anyway?
Why do we come together on a cold, dreary time?
Why do we come to celebrate an ordinary day?
Why do our hearts have so much love for Jesus?
Why?
What is the meaning of the dusty cross on my forehead?
Why does it mean so much?
Our savior comes to be with us, at least every Sunday.
But why Wednesday?
Why?
Is it really okay just to sit with our questions?
Do we even know the answers?
Does God really listen?
To our thoughts and desires? Does he?
And, why?
